I don’t get Twitter … but I’m trying
By Ed Taekema in Web Tools on October 14th, 2008
Ok, so I’m late to the party and am having to play catchup with twitter. I don’t quite think I get it entirely yet, but will give it a go. I’ve setup a twitter account (fishandcross) and twitting(?) about topics similar to this blog and who knows what else. Does anyone have tips for a twitter noob?

I followed you on Twitter. I tweet about whatever happens to catch my attention. Twitter is great for folks who are just interested in a bunch of things and lots of things catch our eye.
Anyways – welcome to twitter and feel free to “follow” me as well. Are you doing twitter online? or on your cellphone? if you do it on your cellphone, watch out – I’ve heard canadian cellproviders charge outrageous prices for sms.

Hey Ed,
Welcome to twitter. I think the “trick” is that there’s nothing specific to “get”. It’s just can you use it and find it useful. It’s like any technology in general. E.g. it’s easy for me to say “Linux us great and really useful” but that’s not really a true assessment.
There are many “examples” of how it could be enjoyed. I particularly found it made the US debates more enjoyable. And I really find it fulfilling to be able to wish someone a good morning or maybe give them some cheerful advice when they sound down or are having a bad day. Often it’s great for questions too “Is there a XXXX people recommend” and you feel like there’s a higher “trust value” then reading random customer reviews.
All in all, like learning anything else just put a little time in to it and you’ll probably get more then you expected out of it!

Thanks for the welcome! I think I am slowly figuring it out … feels very irc’ish … without moderators … so I am pretty happy with it … see you in twitter land.
